I have 2 Penn 650's and many other Penn reels. They are simple and reliable. I would recommend them highly.

I have 4 of the 8500s. Great reels and hard to beat. I have caught everything from Maui Maui to 50lb Flatheads with mine. I once fought a shark from the pier for over 3 hours on one. That shark was well over 8' long. I finally cut my line and let him go.

So is $100 too much for this reel?

Sorry, yes if it is in real good shape I would give a Franklin for one.

I'm thinking about spending $100 on a slightly used one.
PENN no longer makes this type of reel in America.
7500SS and 8500SS would be compareable to the 9500SS.

RugerNiner....as a Penn collector I rate the older Penns (the Greenies especially) a bit higher as they were US made but I also have everything else from 420/SS up from the land of the Chinese also including the 6/7/8 and 9 series. Quality is almost the same and they are fine reels, worth the $ IMHO. It just all depends on what "slightly used means." For $100 I would expect the reel, box and all the papers that went with it...that way you can use it for years and then turn around and sell it for what you have in it if you want. Good luck and good fishing! PS...for what it is worth, my grandaughter just caught seven fish Sat with my Penn 716 Greenie Ultralight...she is 9 and the reel is five times her age! Can't beat Penn quality!

I have one bid in on e-bay so far.
I might wait until winter and start looking for one when no one else is.
