12 guage Double called LEADER
Does anyone know about this gun. 30 INCH BARRELL. SIDE BY SIDE 12 GAUGE. Dovetail hammers , alot of wear brown patina. The only maker I can find or markings is the word Leader. I have pictures, but I cannot figure out how to post them on this topic. Can anyone tell me the value age or anything more than I know. I believe it is from the 1890's to the early 1900's Thanks Jeff

The gun is what is commonly known or called a "Trade Brand Name" shotgun. That is a shotgun made between 1880 and 1940 by a major maker for and sold by a wholesaler or retailer who chose the name to go on the gun. I have three references to the name LEADER. One is The Leader, another is just Leader and the third is Leader Gun Company. I mention all three because it is very important to get the name exactly as it is marked on the gun. Guns with the name just Leader were made by the Shattuck Arms Company of Hatsfield,MA (1878 to 1908) Who sold the the gun, I don't know. Guns with the name The Leader and Leader Arms Co were made by the Crescent Fire Arms Company of Norwich,CT (1892 to 1931). Seller of The Leader is also unknown while guns with the name Leader Gun Co were sold by the Charles Williams Store Inc. of New York,N.Y.. Post the serial number and I can tell you when it was made. Value? Value will depend on the condition of the gun, the amount of original finish remaining on the metal and wood as well as the mechanical condition. These guns were inexpensive utility grade shotguns when new selling for about $25 to $30. Values haven't increased that much over time. Value for a prime example that appears to have come out of the factory yesterday afternoon might bring as high as $175 while a rusty rotten incomplete piece of junk that might make a good boat anchor might bring $10 for parts. Most sell on the various auction sites for $50 to $75. 0
