WASR-2 vs. 5.45 Tantal
Wanting to know if one is better than the other (I'm hearing Tantal a lot...). I bought my WASR-2 for the same price I could've got a Tantal. Mine doesn't have any of the problems that are supposedly 'common' with WASR CAI imports, other than mis-matching parts. I've shot hundreds of rounds through it and not a single jam or other weapon malfunction. I would also like to know if I should pick a Tantal up regardless of these facts. I'd probably have to spend $200 to bring my WASR up to the layout of some Tantals I've seen floating around (Folding stock, bakelite handguards, threaded barrel w/ compensator).

Get the tantal anyway.. but not the one made by century, if you can avoid it.
If your romanian gun doesnt have a canted front sight or other problems I would say you did fine.. Now this is my somewhat professional opinion of AK folding stocks.
Get a russian or bulgarian A-frame steel side folding stock installed, or dont switch your WASR to a folder, unless it is just for looks.[:)]
these guys could make sure the rifle is all the way it should be and do the stock switch.

I heard on this site that many CAI Polish Tantals were built with USA made barrels that are 1:7 twist which is not the standard European twist rate. This sends military surplus ammo tumbling in flight at give or take 300 yards. According to CAI this does not happen with Wolf ammo or any other commercial ammo that does not have a hollow interior of the tip. Mil. surp. FMJ is hollow in the tip to make the bullet tumble upon entry into your target. 0 -
Thats right you will need a 1-9 or 1-10. and one of the most appealing things about 74s in my opinion is surplus ammo prices and performance. 0 -

How do I find out the barrel twist? I just bought it yesterday. The serial is TTL in the mid 3000's (Heard anything less than 1000 has the incorrect barrel?). I did the bullet test where I put a 5.45 round in the muzzle and it sunk to the beginning of the casing, where on my WASR-2 the bullet only sinks to the red ring on the round.0 -

there is an easy way to check the barrel twist, I might have forget. I think it goes like this, get a patch that fills the bore good and tight, and push it into the bore until the rifleing turns the rod one full revolution..hold your thumb at the muzzle, and pull the rod back out, measureing the rod from the rear of the patch eye to your thumb should give you a pretty good idea of the barrels ROT.
If it sunk to the case the barrel is incorrect as DRP-AZ says. You will have problems with accuracy, I wouldnt even shoot the thing if it was me..
I couldnt comment as too whether Century has ever changed ROT to a certianty. my best advice is to just forget century, they didnt build your WASR, they imported built guns and changed the magwell, they build the tantals in house, that is the problem with them..
If you want a tantal find one built by Interarms.. they used origninal polish barrels and NDS receivers, and have a better building crew. Or buy a tantal kit with finish and bore that is 100 percent, and get a professional gun smith to put it together or a nodak receiver.
after 2500 century got to barrel improvements, or so I heard. but they still key hole, just not as much as they used to.. go figure. and that doesnt really even get into canted sights, sloppy barrel pinning, and other sub standard work that has made century built stuff famous.[:D]0 -
Century's propaganda notwithstanding, the problem was that their subcontractor Green Mountain chambered 5.56mm barrel blanks for 5.45mm.
Minor problem...(sarcasm)
Any WASR is going to have a better (and chrome lined) bbl that the US bbl on a Tantal will not.
WASR simply doesn't have dimples. I like the dimples too, they keep the mags from being wobbly and causing misfeeds.0
