WHAT IS THE
cleanest burning pistol powder? Also what would be a good standard load for 44 magnum, 357 magnum and 38 special with that powder. Been using red dot for years and tired of looking at and cleaning my stainless steel guns after shooting the stuff.

I've found that the Alliant powders burn very clean and I like their 2400 powder for use in .357 and .44 Magnum. 0 -
Try the Accurate Arms powders they are ball powders that are cleaner burning then Unique and Red Dot. If you have been using Red Dot which is a fast burning powder for your loads, Accurate Arms #2 would have a very similar burning rate. With AA #2 I would start with 1/2 grain less then the Red Dot load your have been using. Be sure and use a tight/firm crimp on the bullet to ensure total burning/combustion of the powder. 0 -
The higher the pressure the cleaner most will burn.
Try Tite Group, it burns clean with similar charge weights to Red Dot. I also liked 231 a lot in the 38's.0 -
I am with Mark on this one. I like the 2400 for the 44 Magnum, and the 357. Unique works good with the 357, and 38 special too. It all depends on what you are wanting to do with them. For generating horse power, I have been using Hodgdon 110 lately, but for target work it is hard to beat Bullseye, Tite group or 231.

If you don't intend to be shooting magnum loads with heavy weight bullets in your guns, stay away from the slower burning powders. Mostly this affects the 44 mag but also the .357 to a certain extent. Light loads of slow burning powders that don't fill up the cartridge case result in poor powder combustion. You can actually hear the difference in the sounds of the report when firing the reloads. The unburned powder grains that result will foul the handgun badly, in my experience. 0 -

I used 2400 for years for 44+357. Went to H-110 or WW-296. Found them to burn cleaner. 0
