Remington R-15 .223 Opinions.

I'm interested in one of these and just curious what everyone else thinks. Looking for pros and cons. Thanks

    Well read any review on the Busmaster Predator (20" barrel) or the Varminiter (24" barrel) which have been out for over a decade and are the same gun.

    I have had a Varminter for a long time and love it.

    Nwcid is correct in that the R15 is actually manufactured by Bushmaster. That means it has all the issues you find with Bushmaster rifles.

    Nothing actually great about them, but decent hobby quality AR's.

    The varminter rifle is almost 10 pounds empty, almost 45" long, and doesnt have the best ballance. It doesnt come with a second foward sling stud, only one on the bottom, or a practical place to mount a light.



    pros
    It is fairly accurate, fairly stable, and not too picky about ammo. The aluminium handgard is a stable place to drill and tap for a second side sling stud and light mount.

    I customized my BM varminter rifle upper just to see what the results would be.. I got a smith to cut the barrel back to 17-18 inches, turn it down, and refinish it.. then put it back together after mapping the bolt and extension and doing some other stuff to the insides..

    It ended up shooting tigher groups then the gun I got from bushmaster. but it was still heavy and it still strung after heating up, so I traded the upper and kept the lower.

    My personal likes

    I would go with thicker upper receiver, thicker shorter stainless barrel, crowned and threaded with a vortex flash supressor attached via an epoxy so as not to stress the muzzle. carbon fiber handguard and a less bulky stock then the A2.

    About the only feature that I know of the R15 does NOT have that the Bushmaster varmint does, is the two stage trigger. If I plan on any real fine accuracy work, or long range work, then I prefer the two stage that Bushmaster makes. I have became familiar with it, it's adjustment, and installation. It is awesome.
