Legitimo Collins #191 Machete
Anyone know about this machete? I was told that all #191's were made for the Marine Corp. Blade has no markings except Legitimo Collins & co. #191 Made in USA. Blade is forged and tapered full length and overall length is 26". Crown and hammer logo also on blade. Any info will be appreciated, Value?? Thanks! Harry

If none of our folks can help, you might consider posting on the knife forum. 0 -
There is also a book on the Collins machetes that was published a few years ago. It was a paperback and not very expensive. 0 -
It's Collins Legitimus, not Legitimo. These were used in the Pacific for jungle clearing and survival by the Marine Corps (not Corp) in WWII and into the 1950's. They are pretty common and sell in the $100-$125 range in good condition if accompanied with their canvas scabbard and $50-$75 without the scabbard.
Collins & Co. made cutlery products, including US military swords, machetes and knives in Hartford, Ct., from 1845-1965. They also made the famed "V-44" Model #18 "Bowie" fighting knife as used by Carlson's Raiders in WWII.

vega75...Spider has nailed it. These machetes are not rare but condition is everything and since we have no pics', the prices in this down market he quotes are just about right. Now, the V-44 he shows is another thing all together...nice blade![^][^](I have several also!)[:)][:)]0
