Cylinders were easily dropped and damaged when removed, and most only removed them for cleaning. Fired empties were poked out through the slot with a nail, pipe cleaner, etc. or sometimes could be flicked out with a finger nail. This was obviously the preferred method, as 99% of small solid frame revolvers had loading slots.

It makes sense, the way you've explained it. Thanks very much.

It's rather awkward to have frame, cylinder & cylinder pin separated while you need a free hand to load ammo.
With this type of revolver it's often easier to leave the cylinder in the revolver while unloading and loading using the cylinder pin or nail
    to eject empties.
