H &R Sportsman Hammer Problem
I have an old Sportsman which hammer will not lock back. the hammer will fire when the trigger is pulled but the cylinder will not advance. is it the star worn down on the cylinder or something internal in the trigger/hammer assembly. thanks.

most likely this is a problem with the single action sear (small lever behind trigger). two things come to mind as the most common problem broken or missing single action sear spring and worn tip on the single action sear. the parts are available to fix and it is an easy fix if you have any kind of mechanical skills.

sharon1,
Mr. Goforth knows what he is talking about.
...however, just to cover all of the bases: what kind of shape is the gun in, and have you given it a thorough cleaning & proper lubrication?[;)]0 -
sounds to me like you have more then one problem going on with your revolver and a good pistolsmith could be the real answer. 0
