Pre 64 Post 63 Model 94

Rex Mahan
How much difference was there in the very first Post model 94s vs the Pre 64s? As I understand it they got worse as the years came. Did they immediately change the material on the recievers?

    Hello Rex,

    The very early post-1963 guns were the worst. The quality remained essentially unchanged through the early 1970s. The new receiver frame alloy (sintered, a.k.a. "cast" steel) was immediate, starting at serial number 2,700,000.

    Yes, as well as all of the other changes that were made (for the worse).

    My father was an FFL dealer when Winchester cheapened the quality of the Model 94. All of a sudden, they were turning up at K-Marts at prices less than what he had paid to Winchester for the earlier models. He felt that Winchester did this to expand their market by offering them to "big box" stores at discount prices. He was disgusted that they were nothing more than "junk" and never ordered another one.

    Just FYI, I have gotten to look at the "new" 94's brought in by Browning (test torture test rifle and a NIB). They appeared to be a retro back to the *1915-1920 era of quality and design. Admittedly they were pre-production but I was VERY impressed.

    Actually, Browning, as well as Winchester, do not manufacture their firearms. They are nothing but a mere brand name these days. The manufacturer in Belgium is FN, and the one in Japan is Miroku.
