Model 70 Stock

I am looking to replace the synthetic stock on my model 70 30-06 ser # G2178921 with a wood stock. I have seen several stocks for sale on Gunbroker but am unsure which one will fit my gun.I purchased the gun new in 1997.Can anyone tell me which type I need to look for.

    Does one of you know when Winchester droped the more definitive pistol grip on Standard guns? What I mean is that Transition guns use the same looking stocks as Pre War guns and even some of the ones with the "V" Tang will use the same Pre War looking stock for a small number of guns. I can see from my own guns that it must have been somewhere between 101,000 and 152,000. I have read that Winchester would make changes but not all at once so maybe there is a from ___ to ___ that both were used?

    do I need to rephrase this? Ive read Roger Rules book, Madis and Whitaker. I may have missed it but I didnt read a clearity of that topic.

    I doubt that there is a definitive start and end date for slight variations in the oval base of the Model 70 pistol grip. Things that disappeared from their catalog, still showed up in later rifles. I think that's Roger Rule's opinion too. Model 70's were known to contain transition variations using up long inventoried parts including receivers, barrels, sight ramps, safetys,and other things. They were not very stringent in rotating their parts to always use the oldest ones first and consequently dating is a very grey area and sometimes older things showed up in newer rifles.

    Thank you. I read what you said in Roger Rules Book. I just think Im seeing a pattern and would like to know if anyone else has informtion.

    As much effort as Bert puts into 94s it shows just how much there is to tracing Winchesters changes. I really appreciate those who do dive into the details like Bert.

    Dont look for my book anytime soon. lol
