my friend and i are planning on making a 1000 yard shooting gun. we are stuck between the 338 edge or the ultra. well the question is does anyone know the balisitics on a 338 ultra mag at 1000 yards. 0 -
Not really. It seems to be holding steady, though it has not attained the popularity of the 30-06 yet, or ever will. It is actually the ballistic twin of the more expensive, and more popular 338 Lapua. As to why it has not caught on yet is beyond me.

The .338 Remington Ultra Mag (RUM) is holding its own on the cartridge list. It is not slipping but sales are keeping a steady pace as folks are beginning to see the value of this cartridge's performance as opposed to the expense of the cartridges with a higher profile but no net gain in performance. You can pay more for the .338 Lapua all the way around and realize no better performance.
The difference is that several military organizations are fielding the Lapua. This acts as a huge stimulus for the aftermarket folks and the wannabes. Name recognition and front page media attention lends credence to the Lapua that the Remington cartridge will never get. However, the competition between the cartridges is being waged in the background by shooters such as myself and a number of others who have recognized the potential of the .338 RUM by using it in competitions and casually at the range. There is a dedicated group of shooters who are looking for the performance but not at the price of the Lapua components and rifles.
The .375 RUM is making headway also since there is an increase in the development and production of new higher performance bullets for longer range shooting.
On a side note, the term '338 ultra mag' is a reference to a cartridge not caliber.
