Best target .22
My cousin and I are locked into a debate as to the best .22 target pistol ever. I love my Browning Medalist, he likes the Smith 41. What do you think?

WOW sort of like asking what is the best sport/performance auto. Different people have different shooting styles and hand shapes . I will say there are more S&W Model 41's on the firing line at Camp Perry then Browning Medalist. How even the older HIGH Standards Used to be KING on the line . Then along the Kart Conversion units We had the Hammerli 208S and now we also have Marval conversions browning Buckmarks and Rugers. along with a number of different Foreign makers. Does your cousin like the same kind of Steak that you do[?] 0 -

Smith 41s are more popular amongst top tier competitive shooters.
Does that make them "better"?
No. . .just more popular!
Define "better" and you might be able to get an answer to your question.
(And personally, I prefer Hi-Standards, because of the slant grip, among other things).
Edit: I was thinking about this a bit more. In my opinion, empiricism matters, so personally I would define the "best" target pistol as the "most winning" target pistol.
Using that definition, and given the choice of the Browning Medalist and the Smith and Wesson model 41, I think the Smith 41 is the "best" (or more correctly, "better") of the two.
Note that whether or not that makes the gun the best for **YOU** is a totally different thing. Some of that is dependent on your particular anatomy, and some of it is just a question of personal preference.0 -
When I started BE shooting in the early 70's, I wanted a 41, but the LOP was too long , so I "settled" for a Military Citation, agreeing with the theory that the grip angle matches the .45.
BTW, in the early years, I shot a K-38 in CF, and placed second or third in Timed at the old Firestone Pistol club in Akron; I took money V.S. a medal.0 -
Unless we are talking about Olympic type match competition (which demands specialized pistols) I refer High Standards. 0 -
The best one is the one that fits you the best, and you shoot the best.
Not to start a war, but I have always thought of the Model 41 as being an over rated girly gun. I will take a High Standard, Browning Medalist, or a Colt Match Target any day over the S&W 41, and now days take a Buckmark over the 41.

Actually, I like the High Standard's grip slant, the design of the grip and the trigger and the sights are always excellent. I like the ability to switch out barrels too.0 -

2. Was your gun accepted into military use?
3. Was your gun used or still being used in national covert operations abroad?
4. Can you change the front blade on your gun yourself?
5. Can you change the whole barrel on your gun in 15 seconds?
6. Can you change the weight of your gun by changing to a different bbl in 5 seconds?
7. Does your barrel have the option for extra weights?
8. Can your gun be compensated without gunsmithing?
9. Can you install a scope without losing zero in less than 15 seconds?
10. Can you install a scope without gunsmithing?
11. Can you field strip your gun in less than 15 seconds without tools?
12. Even more important, can you reassemble it in 15 seconds without tools?
13. Does your trigger have anti-backlash adjustment?
14. Can your trigger sear be adjusted?
15. Can your standard bullseye gun be converted to Olympic match 22 short in 15 seconds?
16. Can your bullseye gun PASS the Olympic judges and their rules?
17. Can 99% of your parts interchange without fitting?
18. Does your barrel have button swedged rifling?
19. Is your muzzle crowned?
20. Does your gun have stippling?
21. If used, will your gun go down or up in value in 5 years?
I sure hope you can answer yes to all 20 questions, because HIGH STANDARD CAN.

I could shoot my High Standard Trophy better that my S&W 41 for some reason. Off a rest both shot the same, but in a match the HS won [;)] 0 -
