spingfield trapdoor
I have a spingfield trapdoor rifle.It's 52in long barrel is32in. ser#557172 .has wsp 1892 on stock model 1884 .can you tell me anything about this rifle ? I also believe it is a 45/70 cal.and has a 24 stamped over a smaller 41 on side.

Your Model 1884 .45-70 Springfield "Trapdoor" rifle was manufactured in 1892. The inspector's cartouche is more likely "SWP" for Samuel W. Porter, not "WSP". It should have a "ramrod bayonet" (see picture below) which unofficially designates it as a Model 1888 (or "Model 1884 with 1888 improvements"). It should have a case-hardened breechblock and a trap in the butt for a cleaning rod.
