Best long range .308 rifle for the money?
I told my wife if she got another cat then I get a rifle! Well she got the cat so now I'm looking for my .308 rifle! I have done some research, but wanted to see what the experts thought. I have been looking at the Remington 700 SPS in .308, 26 inch barrel, scoped with a huskimaw long range scope with adjustable turrets. Should I go with that or do you guys have a better suggestion?

Questions such as yours need some more information in an attempt to narrow down the potential answers.
There are three pieces in your question:
1) 'Best' as in the very best or modified critically by using 'for the money'?
2) 'Long Range' - what is your range limit? Seriously, do you need 500 yards or do you want to try 1,500 yards?
3) 'Long Range .308 rifle' - Is this possibly a rifle designed specifically for long range target work or should we consider that you might want to hunt with it also? If yes for adding hunting, at what ranges?
In addition to the above, do you have any experience with longer range shooting for accuracy? Have you used different reticles for rangefinding or range estimation?
Better information will help us give you better answers.

I have a lot better suggestion. But first I would suggest you define how long, your long range is. Get yourself a Tikka T3 Varmint or Tactical in 308. That is if you want to stay with a bolt action. If you want something more trick, get a DPMS LR-308 with the SS bull barrel. Get the one with the A-3 upper, with dust cover, and forward assist/shell deflector. I had one, and like a dumb A$$ sold it, and it would consistantly take down popper targets(6" diameter head) out to 600 yards.
The Next thing to do, is get rid of that notion of the Huskimaw scope. It has a nice turret system that can be had elswhere, and the optics(lenses) themselves are of about the Tasco quality level. You would be much better served with a Burris XTR Tactical, for a GOOD starting point. I run Night Force on most of my long range stuff, and also use Schmidt&Binder, and Ziess. Good glass starts at Burris, Nikon, Leupold(more expensive then should be) and Sightron for entry level stuff.

That DPMS I had, would consistantly shoot 1/2MOA using factory MATCH ammo, or the 165 and 180 grain ballistic tip factory ammo.0 -
Long range to me is shooting accurately out to 600 yards and maybe even taking a good lethal shot on big game out to 1000 yards

I was an expert marksman in the service and now I work in law-enforcement. Ability is not an issue- just need the right tools
I use a range finder put out by nikon out to 800 yards.

Is it ethical to try and take big game at 1,000 yards with a 308? I don't think it has enough retained energy at that range to make an ethical, sure kill. If I'm wrong, someone correct me. 0 -

As with hunting any game, at any range, with any thing, shot placement is of extreme importance. I have killed deer with 17 caliber mini rounds like the 17 CCM, and 17 Fireball, and no they were not head shots, but they disabled the CNS.
If one can consistantly place their shots where they need to, 1000 FPE is not going to be a factor. Heck, they tout the 357 Magnum as a hunting round, and it has no where near the mythical magical number of 1000FPE.

One of if not the most accurate factory rifles are Savage. I don't own one only because they are butt ugly.

for the money, a custom rifle rig on a trued Remington 700 action fitted to an aluminum stock chassis..
medium or heavy barrel with broach cut rifleing in the length you want.. or you can go with a thin barrel and have a sleeve fitted such as one these guys offer..
