1906 Winchester - HELP Bert (and others)
A friend just acquired a 1906 Winchester chambered in 22 short.
The forearm was broken into pieces and he had to replace it. When he ordered the forearm, he also ordered several new screws to replace some that were buggered up.
I do not have pictures at this time nor do I even have the serial number, but being in 22 short and by checking the s/n, he believes it to be made within the first two years of prod..
My question is about the front site. It has a fold-down front site which is a ring with a post in the center. I folds toward the front. I have never seen a site like this one and all the '06's that I have looked at on the net etc., none had a site like this. The gentleman that he got the parts from told him that this was a correct site for that rifle. Was it offered as an option? In what years was this site offered? Is it more valuable with this site since it was an option?
I will get pictures eventually, but may take a while.
Any help with this limited amount of information will be appreciated.

Spider and Trap55, Yep that looks like it.
Should it fold to the front or to the back? Seems it should fold to the rear but it currently folds to the front. Do you think it was removed and when reinstalled, was put in backwards? Also, it does not lock in the up or down position. From the pictures, it looks like there is a pin to lock it in the up or down position.
I looked for a name (Lyman or Marbles) and did not see a name or a number. Could it be on the bottom of the sight that you would have to remove it from the dovetail to see it?

Peabo, sounds like a "Beech" front sight. Lyman and Marbles I believe both were used, Bert can tell you what was an option.

The few I have all fold forward, repro's and vintage, Marbles and Lyman. I like to use them in combination with tang sights, fold them both down and use the barrel sights.
The Number 71 Beech Sight was an option on the 1906. For a whole $2.50! They run about $75-$175 now.0 -
More than likely it is a Lyman No. 5 combination sight versus a Beach combination sight. By the time the Model 1906 was introduced, Lyman had discontinued the Beach in favor of the No. 5 series sight.
The Lyman No. 5 combination sight was a special order sight on almost every Winchestere model, and when factory installed, it was very frequently accompanied by a Lyman No. 1 or a No. 2 tang sight.0 -
