Lake Erie Chemical Company was a division of Smith and Wesson and they produced a variety of chemical grenades (among other items) using CN and CS gas. The older CN gas is pretty common and found in most of the little tear gas sprays while CN is much more potent and often restricted to law enforcement.
State and local laws are what you are going to have to deal with as there is no one size fits all regulation for chemical weapons. Gas grenades are usually considered to be offensive rather than defencive chemical weapons so that may or may not have a bearing on local laws.0 -

Mike- besides the "Red Comet" fire grenades, there were ALSO a chemical deterrents to safe cracking. These were containers of tear gas on the internal works of a safe. Drill it, or shoot it with nitro, and get a blast of CN tear gas on you- and on the money.
As a practical matter, I would not keep those OR CN/ CS grenades around. One WHOOOPS and you will find out what your homeowner's insurance will NOT pay to have cleaned up.0 -

Depends on State and local rules where you live.
Also depends on what exactly is in your grenade and how much of it.
Some places ban non police or military possession of any form of tear gas (eg NJ, the entire country of Canada, etc). Some places ban tear gas containers above a certain weight (eg CA) and yours probably qualifies as "too much".
Some places ban various mixtures of CS and CN gas. (For what its worth, use of CN has been mostly discontinued. Currently most police and military are using either pepper spray or CS or some combination of both).
So without knowing whats in your grenade or where you live, its impossible to answer this question.
As a general principle, though, unless you are in the police or military, you are probably better off without something like that.
Tear gas grenades are intended for outdoor crowd dispersal, not personal self-defense, meaning the likelihood of it causing trouble is a *LOT* higher than the likelihood of using it legally for its intended purpose.0 -

I have a blue can with an eagle on it. It is about the size of a soda can. The can reads lake Erie irritant agent (cs) grenade continuous discharge. Fuse delay 1 sec. Replace before 7/72. A Division of Smith & Wesson. It was gave to me in it's original box wich was open. 0
