Winchester 52C questions

My grandfather gave me a Winchester Model 52C S/N: 86978C last year. I've just been shooting it behind my house, and haven't researched all that much, but I'm starting to really get into shooting and would like to know some more about my guns.
1. What year was it made?
2. What is a good period scope I can get for it?
3. I'm missing the sling and one of the pieces to screw the sling into. What is a good sling to get, and what is the correct terminology for this piece?

Hello your rifle is the type that was used for N.R.A. small Bore Matches . Contact Homer at Champions Choice or Champions Shooters Supply both of these companies support the small bore shooter. and take their shops to Camp Perry "the National Championships." They sell both used and new items and accessories as well as parts for your type Rifle.

Sweeeet ! You take good care of that fine heirloom . Your Grandfather had an eye for quality . My Grandfather only owned two rifles , a 52 and a 71 . I will never inherit either of them , but my cousins are taking good care of them ! 0 -
Thank you for the information. I found a parts manual, and it looks like the parts I am missing are the Stock Swivel Base and the Forearm Adjustment Front Swivel Bow, plus screws.
Would this fit on my gun?

According to them it will! If it is not a perfect fit , file the swivel , and leave the wood alone . If your file slips it's no big deal . If a knife or chisel slips , the results would be more difficult to fix . 0 -

Specter177, Welcome to the forum. You will find some helpful people and good advice here, as you can already see.
I shot a 52C exactly like your rifle for 4 years on a college ROTC rifle team so know exactly what you have.
The part you found is a replica and would probably work but I suggest a rifle of the quality of the 52C deserves original factory parts. They are available on the internet auctions from time to time and can be found at some gun shows.
The parts you need for the front sling swivel are not just the bow and screws. I believe that part is for the sporting type model 70. The hand stop that goes with the forearm swivel assembly is made of a substance called Bakelite. I think I have a spare in my parts and will see if I can find it. They are hard to find as are the other parts for the rifle you have.
The scope mounting blocks pictured on your rifle are an early type, as best I can tell from the one photograph. The screw that held the ring assembly to the block had a pointed end. When tightened it went into the hole in the side of the block. Later mounting screws had a concave end that matched a milled out place on the edge of the top of the block. Using a ring assembly with the wrong screws can result in damage to the scope block and the end of the mounting screws. I am telling you this as I have seen such damage.
The target scopes with external mounts were being made years before Unertl went into business but some people refer to them as Unertl type. Period correct target scopes were made by Fecker, Unertl, Lyman, Bausch and Lomb, Litschert and some others. Lyman was the most commonly seen. Some of the Lyman model names were Jr. Targetspot, Targetspot and Super Targetspot. Any would work on your rifle with the Super Targetspot being the top of the line.
Your parts manual should be all you need to see what parts you need but I can fax you a copy of the Winchester parts manual page if you need more.
The period correct sling, and the type still being used by position shooters, is military model 1907 sling or the civilian equivalent. There are at lest two makers of high quality reproductions of the model 1907 sling. Civilian copies, not exact copies, vary from excellent leather and workmanship to pure junk.

PS: The rifles came with three barrel weights. I believe they were called Standard, Heavy and Bull. Yours looks the Standard weight.0 -

Specter177, The model 61 and model 62 Winchesters are collectors items. Fitting a sling to them, while possible, would detract from their value. 0 -
