Winchester 73's
I have seen references to first, second and third model Winchester 1873's. How do you tell one from the other?

The difference is in how the mortise (dust) cover is attached to the receiver frame. Generally speaking, serial numbers 1 - 30000 are First Models, serials 30000 - 90000 are Second Models, and everything thereafter was a Third Model. There are exceptions that ocurr near each of the serial number transition points.
On the First Model, the mortise cover slides inside a set of milled grooves on the top of the receiver frame.
On the Second Model, the mortise cover slides on top of a rail that is attached to the top of the receiver frame with two screws.
On the Third Model, the mortise cover rail is an integral part of the reeiver frame (non detachable).
