marlin had a bunch of these pumpers, all built on the same design (1898/19/19g/19n/19s/21/49). every time they made a 'change' they chaged the mod. #. Marlin recommended they not be shot. the only shotgun I've heard reffered to as 'the widow maker' was the m-1911 winchester.

Marlin put the model number on the back strap of these shotguns except for the 1898 Model. Most of these shotguns had 30 inch barrel except for the trap guns and they were 26 inch. Is the barrel on you shotgun a take down or is it fixed in the receiver with torque. The value of these are not much unless you have one of the engraved models with fancy wood.

In 1998 Marlin deemed A LOT of their pump action shotguns unsafe to shoot and includes most if not all their hammer pumps and SOME hammerless pump shotguns.
Models unsafe to shoot: Hammer guns
    1898, 16, 17, 19, 19S, 19N, 19G, 21, 24, 24G, 26, 30, 42, 49,
    49N

    Hammerless Guns
    28, 31, 43, 44, 53, 63

If it is one of those models I would think twice about ever firing them-might want to make it a nice wallhanger
