I have this old gun

I just was given this old gun from a friend a church. Its looks like it says hopkins alen, the heritage model, I am guessing that it 32 cal. It has the hammer on the bottom and is part of the trigger gard.

I would love to know anything about it, I have had blackpowder guns before but this is like nothing I have seen before.

    It's not an antique: These were sold in 1960s by Numrich Arms of West Hurley NY, who owned the Hopkins & Allen name. There was a "buggy rifle" and a "boot pistol" both using the underhammer system. You can still buy parts from them:

    It's what called a "Underhammer Muzzle Loader". They were sold by Numrich/Gun Parts Corp. during the 70/80's time frame. It's a modern made gun that doesn't have any history/value as a antique. N/GPC sold a whole range of these Underhammer muzzle loaders, in different calibers even a handgun version.

    Can't help with the powder charge, as that is based on caliber. Be sure to use Black Powder or one of the low pressure BP substitutes on the market now though.

    The percussion caps present another challenge. Since the nipple points straight down the caps have to crimped so that they just don't fall off the nipple. I always used the CCI brand as they were made of aluminum with notches around the periphery of the cap. They were easy to crimp and stayed on the nipple after firing, unlike the copper caps made by RWS.
