300 conversion

What problems should I expect to have in rechambering a Weatherby MKV ultra Lt Wt. in 300 WBY. to a 300 RUM??? What did Browning ever mfg. in 30 cal. that could be rechambered 300 RUM. I'm trying to stay with the short bolt throw of Wby., and Browning. I also have a Browning Abolt in 30-06 cal. can the bolt face be opened up, with a Sako type extractor. What about mag. box and follower? THX HAWKSHAW

    The only problem I forsee would be the action rails might need to be opened up to feed the fatter bodied RUM.

    Browning actually made some A-Bolts in 300 RUM. They are few and far between, but you see them on the auction side from time to time. I had an SS A-Bolt last year in 300 RUM for about 6 months. Long enough to use it for deer season here, then I sold it on the auction side. It was a good shooter, but the recoil will loosen the fillings in your teeth. Even after I put a SVL pad on it. Also, Browning usually chambers the throat to the magazine length. They did not do so with this beast. There was almost 3/8" of free bore when the bullets weere seated to just fit in the magazine. I ran some samples seated to just off the lands thru it, and it did not seem to improve it much. The rifle would shoot MOA or slightly better with the bullets seated to magazine length. I am not sure if the 300 Win Mag action is the same length or not, but am reasonably sure the 375 H&H action would be the length you are looking for, and have the bolt face you need too.

    One thing you also need to understand, if you don't already, would be that the RUM is not a high volume shooting gun. The barrel gets hot real fast, especially with the sporter weight barrels. FWIW, I don't believe there is an aweful lot of advantage of the 300 RUM over the 300 Win Mag, untill you get past 1000 yards.
