S&W 438
I have a friend trying to trade me a S&W 438 against my Colt AR 15 .22. Both are like new. Anything I need to know about the 438?

a 438 is a j frame 38+p nice little carry gun.
used like new in box is worth about 350 + or - , a nib about 450 +.

Smith 438 is a light .38+P shrouded hammer (ie "bodyguard" style) snubnose revolver with aluminum alloy frame.
The light weight means a good bit of recoil, and the small fixed sights (designed for low snagging, not good visibility) mean this is not something you could use for recreational or target shooting.
But its an awesome concealed carry gun, one of the best out there in terms of revolvers.
They run about $450 new.
In contrast to what Tank suggests, I think you're going to have a hard time finding a used one for $350 (and if you know where one is, let me know, because I'm buying it!). The Smith airweight guns tend to hold their value used fairly well, and I'd estimate $400 as a probable more realistic used value for one like-new in box.
You know what the Umarex (licensed Colt) AR-22 is, and those run about $550 new right now. Used? Eh. . .maybe $475. IMO these are a bit overpriced for what they are (ie just a blowback action semi-auto .22 rifle), but the price is based around that of a "real" AR-15 and what the market can bear.
I think your friend would be ahead a little bit on an even trade, though it could be a fair swap if the revolver also included some accessories like a decent holster and box or two of +P carry ammo.0 -
