Need help identifying revolver

Hi! My late grandfather left this behind, but I have not been able to find much out about it. I have attached a picture for your review.



I know that:

-it is .38 caliber.

-Uses .38 long or short colt ammunition.

-It has a hexagon shaped barrel.

-It has a mark Crown over Crown over U. I found that a Crown over U signifies a German inspection proof.

-It is also marked with 330 on the barrel, in the chamber, under the grips and on the metal frame.

-It also has 64 marked in the chamber and under the grips.

    If the barrel has eight sides, it's an octagon and not a hexagon (which only has six sides).

    You can't imbed pictures directly into the forum. You need to upload them to a photo website like photobucket.com and post the images or links here.

    It's a large military type revolver that dates to the late 19th Century. Most of this type of revolver were made in Belgium rather then Germany. The "Crown U" was a German proof mark put on the guns that were proofed in their final, finished, assembled state, although not required to have been actually been made in Germany. With the lack of Belgian proofs that were required on handguns actually made in Belgium, my WAG is that it was made in Spain for commercial sale in Germany. Just recently we had photos of a very similar revolver on the forum with the name Simpson stamped on it. I also believe that it was made in Spain, for commercial sale in Germany.

    What other marks are present? Are you sure the Belgian ELG in oval proofmark is not on rear face of the cylinder? The Belgian guns usually also have an inspector's mark on the frame consisting of a star over the inspector's initial, which might be mistaken for the German proofmark.

    It's a copy of the British Webley RIC revolver.

    And it does appear to have an 8 sided octagon barrel.

    and, yes, they both had hexagonal barrels.I think rufe got it right with belgium or spain, most likely spain

    The Webley RIC has a round barrel.
