Iver Johnson Model 1900

I understand from previous posts that the later H&R Model 1906 and the Iver Johnson Model 1900 revolvers both have cylinders designed to fire .22 short and .22 long cartridges. However,out of dumb curiosity, I'd like to know if either one (or both) have cylinders that were actually long enough (i.e. at least .98 inches long) to handle/enclose a modern .22 long rifle cartridge. Even if their cylinders were that size, I realize such cartridges could not be fired safely, of course. I have seen several Internet gun auctions ads that have offered ".22 LR IJ Model 1900" revolvers. I also saw a recent ad for an old "Hopkins & Allen XL .22LR," which doesn't sound right. From what little I have learned, there were no early solid frame revolvers made of very small size that had cylinders that were actually long enough to load modern .22 long rifle cartridges. Am I right or wrong? - GW

    From what is understood you can fire lr but not performance type or hyper LR .22.

    the cylinders of the H&R M1906 and the I.J. Model 1900 are long enough for the LR cartridge. these two models were advertized in the catalog as being chambered in the LR cartridge. but remember when these revolvers were made. do not fire modern high velocity in this. it would be best to stay with short and longs with only occasionl cylinders of LR in them.

    another caution is the I.J. Model 1900's that do not have a letter code in prefix (on left side of grip frame) in the serial number were made before 1909 when iver johnson made the switch to smokeless powder.

    in the hopkins & allen line i would treat all of them like black powder only models.

    It sounds like the Hopkins and Allen XL also had a cylinder long enough for a modern .22 LR cartridge, but was designed for black powder. Were there any other small H&A or other brands of revolvers of the same caliber (other than H&R and Iver Johnson)? Again, I'm just curious, since I'm a beginner and am interested in collecting very small, old .22 caliber revolvers. I'm especially interested in those having cylinders long enough for .22LR. But I would not plan on loading them with .22 LR ammo. - GW

    You could safely shoot some specialty ammo like aguila powderless out of them- those are LR in dimensions.
