    Never heard of a U/D scope.
    It looks like any number of inexpensive Japanese scopes of the 1960s. (Before the really cheap stuff started coming in from Communist China.)
    I'd want something nicer on my Mannlicher... if I had one.

    I believe that it is from the old United Binocular Company, who imported good quality Japanese optics of all kinds during the early 1960s, most of which were sold through catalogs. The scope mount is the classic Pachmyer folding mount which was extremely popular from the late 1950s and into the early 1970s.

    Don't count Japanese optics out. Japanese-made Tasco rifle scopes were produced under the Burris patents, which Tasco could have worked around (like many others did) and saved a bunch of money. But they were apparently interested in producing a quality product. Asahi Optical (Pentax) produced high-resolution aerial recon cameras during WW2, and Japanese Naval rangefinders had a reputation of being among the best in the world. They have a history of knowing how to do optics.
