Making 357 Mag into 22 Jet

How difficult is it to make 22 Jet brass from 357 brass? Does it take a set of form dies? I would assume so.

    I'm sure the process would be much easier with the proper form dies. That's a big reduction in case mouth and likely requires annealing also. I don't have my cartridge conversions handbook here so can't say specifically what it takes.

    I don't know how many steps it is, but the RCBS form die set is $249.95! Plus the loading die set.

    You need to use brass cases (new is best), no nickled. Getting the right amount of lube is the key. You get a large percentage of creased necks and shoulders. Unless you have a large amount of 357 brass, a lot of free time or you shoot a lot of Jet it is easier to just buy the Jet brass IMHO.

    My Jet is my favorite pistol. A long time ago I was told to expect to get one out of ten when case forming with a 2 die set. The % goes way up with a 7 or 9 die set. Last check at Midwayusa.com was about $60/100 for new brass. With 45 gr cast bullet I can run them hot enough to require both ear plugs and muff. I have had excellent case life of more than 10 reloads. I do not pump them all the way up with the correct Hornady (.222 dia) bullet to avoid extraction issues. No lube in cylinder or on the case.

    Oh and it really weird out folks when you change from shooting 22 rim fire to the 22RCFM without doing a lot.

    When I first got it I could shoot the neck off a quart beer bottle, then shoot the rest of that bottle at 50 yards. We could take the centers of a clay birds at 100 yards. I can't see that good any more and the pistol has had around 10,000 rounds of my reloads and it was used when I got it at a bargin because I was a shooter not a collector.

    It sounds like forming Jet brass from .357s is a major pain. I buy jet brass from Black Hills. Most of the Jet ammo I have fired from my Smith 53 has been factory and it constantly binds up the cylinder. Not sure if its too hot. I keep the chambers very clean but they still bind and are very hard to extract.
