OK:

44 Special 250 Grain Hawk BCFP
Manufacturer: Grizzly Cartridge
SKU: 44SPEC250HAWKBCFP
Price: $38.95
Quantity:
Caliber: 44 Special
Bullet Wt: 250 Grain Hawk BCFP
Velocity: 850 fps
No. of Rounds: 20
So that's $40 for 20 rounds of custom .44 special that are basically *slightly better than .45 ACP ballistics? Ouch.
This one looks a lot better:

A great woods load for your 44 Special! This cartridge uses standard pressure. You can use it in any .44 Special that is in good condition! This powerful loading comes in boxes of 20!
Caliber : .44 Special
Bullet : 240gr SWC Keith Style Hardcast
Ballistics : 985fps - 539ft./lbs. - 6.5" bbl.
1210fps from a Win. 1894AE 16" trapper carbine
Box of 20rds.
Now we get superior ballistics to the Grizzly cartridge at roughly half the price. That's looking a lot better to me.
Still, at over $1 a round, this stuff ain't cheap, and IMO these sorts of costs are probably THE most significant drawback to .44 special in general. Ammo cost is really not much different than .44 magnum.0 -
I've shot that Double Tap ammo out of my Bisley Blackhawk .44 Special. It's decent ammo but you can reload your own very easily if you just want plinking ammo. If you want some factory defense loads and you want something with some punch to it I'll suggest Buffalo Bore http://www.buffalobore.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=88
at 265 grains & 1000 fps & 566 ft lbs of energy you will ruin a bad guys day for sure and that load EXCEEDS their .45 ACP +p in the energy dept but not by a lot. Corbon also makes a very good defense round in .44 Special. If you really want some fun plinking, run some .44 Russian through it.0 -
I shoot 44special/44magnum almost exclusively and reload to be able to afford to shoot as often as I like.
For plinking, you may was to look at some of the SASS ammunition providers.0
