thread on a luger barrel
hey fellers.
iv`e got a p08 luger...and iv`e got a spare barrel extension and spare toggle assembly.
do any of you know what the thread is on a luger barrel? the reason i want to know is that here we can only shoot pistols(legally anyway) if the barrel is over 120mm and 100mm on revolvers. i want to get a barrel made up for my luger so i`ll have a spare. at the moment it`s got the standard 8 inch artillery barrel on it and it shoots great but i`d like to get a 6 inch one for it.

I don't understand why you need it; if your machinist has your barrel extension, he can just measure the inside thread on that.
I would think that your machinist would also need a set of drawings, or a stripped barrel in hand.
I can't imagine how much such a project would cost. I don't know about Down Under, but in the US machinists are in great demand & get a really nice wage.
About 50 years ago Gun Parts Corp (Numrich) had manufactured a batch of Luger barrels in different lengths from an unknown source, as there was never a source of German-made barrels after WW2. Last time I checked they had only 4" barrels. But, even if they still have some longer barrels, they are not exportable.

It's 20 threads per inch sharp V thread, .710" outside diameter.
Length of threaded shank is .730 and is undercut to .625x.100" at the breech. The shoulder can be up to .860 dia before it interferes with the frame.
Besides chambering, you will also have to file an extractor groove and a feed ramp.
After chambering when doing the ramp, see that the forward extent of the ramp doesn't extend beyond the the cartridge web. Cut a 9mm lengthwise to examine the web shape & thickness.
This is a timed thread if the sight is already installed.
Some replacement barrels are extremely tight but they needn't be as long as the barrel can be snugged up. Let the machinist have the extension to fit the thread to.
Barrel extensions are SOFT so work out how you're going to hold it when you install the barrel so as not to bugger up the profile.
I had a socket made; drilled, milled and filed to fit a few "tuning forks" only to find there is enough variation in profile at the receiver ring that you can bugger up a loose one.
Come back if you get stuck.
P.S. If a 9mm blank, Sterling or Sten barrel can't be found,it might be easier to find a .308 bore rifle barrel and convert to 30Luger.
That round can be loaded to 1490fps out of a 6" barrel.0 -

thank you.
i`ll write all this down and start looking for the barrel i can use. i have a bloke lined up who will do the work for me,so that isn`t a problem. he just told me to find a barrel that will work ok.0 -
Leave the front sight for last after you've done the chamber and the feed ramp and extractor slot are located and cut.
A timed thread is a sticky wicket for a machinist.
If you end up with a 7.65 (.308) barrel and need profile dimensions or loading data for the 6" Parabellum barrel contact me.

A BARREL FROM A SWEDISK 'K' WORKS WELL, ENOUGHT 'MEAT' TO TURN AND THREAD. 0
