Snap Caps

I am wondering if anyone knows if a person should use a snap cap on guns so that the firing pin is not always in a cocked positions. Ex: when a person shots the last round in a gun and ejects the last round the firing pin is ready to shoot again. I am wondering if this will have any effect on the life of the spring or maybe it will not really do anything. Thanks Everyone

    They will work for a short time until the firing has deformed them. Get the aluminum snap caps for long term use.

    You can also pop the spent primer out and seat a bullet then cut a pencil eraser to fit and make them [;)]

    Yes, but after just a few hits (and maybe less than a few), the primer will be dented to the point where it won't effectively cushion the firing pin anymore.

    I'm not even sure you really need snap caps for most centerfire revolvers, but if you're worried about this, its worth it getting the real thing.

    As mentioned, you can make your own "fake" snap caps by poking out the primers from empty cartridges, then filling the gap with carefully carved pencil eraser to act as a firing pin cushion.

    If you do this, you don't really "need" to load bullets into the spent shells, though this will make your poor man's snap caps easier to load. I'd also take pains to color the bases and noses of the snap caps a different color than ordinary shells, to help prevent problems/issues (red nail polish could work). The only thing worse than someone else thinking your snap caps are live rounds, are YOU thinking they are.

    Pencil erasers will not cushion a firing pin. The pin will simply pierce them. They are also very abrasive to the firing pin tip.
    Buy real snap caps.

    No, you need to have a heavy spring attached to the primer inside of the shell taking up the shock. The goal is to keep the shock off of the firing pin.

    I have used easers for years in fired shells in primer area,depends on what you use,I use the ones from typewriter erasers as the are harder.tks hedge[:D]
