1911 Questions - Photos
Back to Gun Broker - the best info source. After couple days on another specialist forum about 1911s brought little response except it is a mismatch of slide to lower.
I got this 1911 few days ago, about 50% condition, my second 1911. I have $1250+S&H in it. I bought it as one of three a 1902 & a 1905. I'm into pre-1911s, no experience with 1911 militaries. S/N is 195ks. Pictures flatter it some. It has s two tone mag. Original finish is blackish over mill marks in the metal. The receiver is somewhat better finished and a bit bluer than the blackish slide, both mill finish but slide is rougher. Is this a 'black army' and if so what is significance of that? Any info, comments, value, etc will be appreciated. Thanks

Since the markings on the right side of the slide have serifs, it would be correct for a 1911 up to around 180K according to Charles Clawson (Collectors Guide to Colt .45 Service Pistols Models of 1911 and 1911A1). So, that would mean it is from an earlier gun. Plus, there appears to have been some buffing on the right side of the slide (note the wavy transition from top to side, the rounding in front of the serrations, & the faint pony).
Your photos aren't close enough, & we can't see all the frame & receiver markings, or all the small parts. I assume the barrel is pitted, if original, or a replacement.
Pistol appears to have been made 1917-1918. It is not a black army, as these were made in mid-1918 with the oven blue process which wore off quickly.
I think you paid retail for it.

Thanks for replies. I know my pix are lacking; both a problem of equipment and expertise. No, the slide hasn't been buffed. Probably a fault of my pixology. I looked at it under magnifier and the fine milling marks are intact & consistent. The logo is just a light uneven impression - typical of most of my '02 & '05s. As for price, I knew it was higher that I would normally pay but the overall deal was price-right and I got two pieces that I was really looking for. The 1905 and the 1902 Sport are about the same in terms of numbers mfg but I really like the 1905 - apparently most people do considering how they are priced. Thanks again! 0 -
Pixology? The photo of the right side doesn't show the 'pixology'. Only the left side.
My take: Slide sides untouched. Looks like someone worked on the radius area of the slide (slide top). The 'eave' of the curved top on the left side is not 'plumb', for lack of a better phrase. Point the gun directly at a light source, and look down the left side of the slide from a shallow angle, and see for yourself.
