K98 Mauser Ammo

The K98 Mauser rifle takes 7.92mm ammo. The guy at the sporting goods store sold me 8mm Mauser and said its the same. I really had to push to get the cartridges into an MG34 machine gun belt. Is it really the same size?

  7.92 x 57 mm is the "official" cartridge name.
  
  But most Americans call it "8mm Mauser".
  
  Same thing.

  7.92X57mm is indeed the same as 8mm.
  
  To get more technical, there are a variety of loadings. For MG use the most common is 7.92X57mm isS, or the heavy ball infantry spitzer loading. Though most iS will work too (light ball).
  
  Just remember if it is milsurp ammo it is corrosively primed and should be cleaned with a water based cleaner (hot soapy water is best, then dry, clean as normal).
