Diameter Measurement of Shot gun barrell
I am in the process of writing a pro-gun letter to the editor of the local anti-gun Kansas City "Red" Star newspaper. But I need some information I am not sure I can easily find.
Of the various shotgun barrels (all the gauges) what is the diameter measurement of each one? An answer in inches or millimeters would help. In other words, I want to be able to compare the "caliber" of a 12 gauge (for one example) shotgun to the caliber of, say, a .50 caliber Barrett.
Also, with a 12 gauge shot gun, what is the maximum weight of the largest shotgun slug fired from a 12 gauge.
Last question, what is the total number of pellets that a 12 gauge can fire out of the various birdshot loads? (number 6 shot pellets or whatever, what is the most pellets that can be loaded into one shell?)
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

12 gauge is nominal .729"; others are: The actual (nominal) bore diameters of the various gauges are as follows: 10 gauge = .775 inch, 12 gauge = .729 inch, 16 gauge = .662 inch, 20 gauge = .615 inch, 28 gauge = .550 inch. The .410 is named for its nominal bore size, and is not a gauge at all.
The heaviest 12 gauge slug I can find is 1.25 oz.
US No 6 lead shot is 218 to the ounce; multiply by the shot charge to get a count.

Mark has a point. You might want to run a draft of your letter by us for fact checking.
I think the effect of your letter could be the opposite of what you would like. It would just show the committed antis that a shotgun is a serious weapon, too. It will not convince the shotgun elitists that rifles and pistols are ok.0 -
I'm not sure what direction you might be headed with your plan but typical muzzle energy for a 12 gauge slug is around 2400 foot pounds while a .50 BMG M2 round delivers 12,600 fp. Slugs have extremely poor ballistic coefficient so at 100 meters that same 12 gauge slug's energy reading has dropped to about 900 fps, or an entergy loss of around 60%. At 100 meters the .50 BMG energy levels have barely changed. 0 -
Mark and Hawk Carse, I appreciate your feedback and you have good points. I probably will kinda run the letter by the guys here before I send it.
But my basic premise is sound. Especially when we all know how the anti-gun side exaggerates to the point of lieing, I have decided to use their tactics to my advantage in an effort to try and sway at least a few people. Course, the difference between me and the lieing anti-gun side is that I will not actually lie. However, I WILL use the facts in an honest way to make my best point that is possible.
Here are two examples of what I am referring to:
Most of the media totally dislikes citizens to own large caliber rifles such as the .50 Barrett. I believe that caliber has even been outlawed entirely in CA. My local anti-gun newspaper, the Kansas City "Red" Star has two commentary writers in particular that gall me. Both of them freely admit to owning shotguns but scold people like me for owning rifles and handguns. I want to inform them how ignorant and hypocritical they are. For example from the information given to me here, a 12 gauge shot gun basically shoots a .73 caliber "bullet." I don't need to debate with the anti-gunners that the shotgun is short range and the rifle long range. Just by stating that their shotgun will fire a .73 caliber bullet but they still frown on me having a smaller .50 caliber rifle to me makes them hypocrits. A shooting victim cares little whether he was shot from 100 yards or 100 feet. Getting shot by a larger bullet is getting by a larger bullet.
In addition most all media wants to ban so-called "assault" weapons. Course we gun people know that none of us (except for the very few who have a special permit) own true "assault" weapons. What we do one are military look-alikes that will only fire one bullet for one trigger pull. I want to show the hypocrisy of the anti-gun shotgun owning newspaper writers that their shotgun is capable of firing a COUPLE OF HUNDRED "bullets" with A SINGLE PULL OF THEIR TRIGGER (218 #6 shot pellets to the ounce).
Hopefully, if my letter gets published and people find the logic I am offering, they will recognize such people as the shotgun owning newspaper writers as being hypocrits. When and if that happens, those two writers will have lost a lot of credibility when writing negative articles about peaceful, lawful gun owners.

Like where you are going with the concept of shotgun equivlent to pistols. A friend in security stated that he preferd a 12 ga with 00 or 000 buckshot as being equivlant to 8 shots from a 9mm in one pull. 0
