Ammo Limit

I was told by a nephew that there was a limit on how much ammo a person could have. Is there any law that prohibits the ammount of ammo a person can own?

    Not in the USA that I know of.
    There might be some repressive state law or local ordnance, but nothing widespread.

    Federally the only laws about ammo limits is how much can you afford and have room for. You would be shocked at how much ammo some people have.

    You will have to check your state, http://www.atf.gov/publications/firearms/state-laws/29th-edition/index.html and local laws to find out for sure. I am not aware of any state laws that have a limit but there are a lot of different state laws.

    Also if your nephew thinks it is a law ask him where he saw, not heard, but saw the law he is talking about.



    EDIT: Mark makes a good point. Check you local Fire Codes as those probably will say something about storage regulations.

    Black powder is an explosive and does have ATF regulations, http://www.atf.gov/explosives/how-to/explosive-storage-requirements.html
    Of course there is still state and local laws.

    Smokeless powder for reloading is a propellent not an explosive.

    There are actually quite a few states and individual localities that place restrictions on the amount of ammuniiton and components as well has maintaining standards for proper storage of ammunition, smokeless powder and black powder. Your state fire Marshall will be able to tell you exactly what, of any, limits are in place in your area.

    This is an area where commom sense should guide your actions. If you have the means to legally acquire a cashe of ammo, you probably have a pretty good idea of what a realistic hoard of ammo is and how to safely store it. A hoard to some folks is nothing more than an afternoon of shooting their title II firearm. Several thousand rounds of 9mm, 223 or 7.65 x 39mm could be a hoard to some or an afternoon of shooting pleasure to others.

    Depends on jurisdiction.

    This is an extreme example, but in some states (eg MA) its a crime for anyone to own **ANY** ammo, including UNLOADED ammo components (ie FIRED brass or UNLOADED bullets) *UNLESS* they have a State-issued firearms ID card.

    As Mark pointed out, in some jurisdictions there are limits as to the quantity of ammo that can be stored in one place and regulations about how the ammo must be stored; this is mostly a matter of the fire code.

    Note that while these regulations are virtually never actually enforced, you can get in quite a bit of trouble if there is a fire, or other reason for gov't intervention on your property.

    Illinois requires a FOID card to buy or posess ammo but I am not aware of any quanity limits, YET.
