Ruger 77 tang safety model

When did Ruger change to a black butt pad? I just acquired one and all my other tang safety models have red pads. I know the Mark II's have black pads but this isn't a Mark II. According to my serial number references, this one is a 1990.

  1990, between SN 772-85628 and 772-87596. The first black pad would have appeared at 85628 and the last known red pad would have been at the 87596, with either black or red pads on the numbers in between (change over, using up old stock red pads). Give or take some on either end.

  Thanks. The one I have is pretty close to the end of the 772 series, so well into the black pad production.

  I always assumed the black pad was the markII. I dont think ive ever seen a tang safety with a black pad. Learned something new today. Thanks
