Well a good grain is any.
FPS HAS to be ~1,125 or under to be SS. Most people that load SS ammo try for ~1050 FPS
The speed of sound is the rate of travel of a sound wave through an elastic medium. In dry air at 20 ?C (68 ?F), the speed of sound is 343 metres per second (1,125 ft/s). Things can make a difference in the speed of sound too,
In the Earth's atmosphere, the most important factor affecting the speed of sound is the temperature (see Details below). Since temperature and thus the speed of sound normally decrease with increasing altitude, sound is refracted upward, away from listeners on the ground, creating an acoustic shadow at some distance from the source.[4] The decrease of the sound speed with height is referred to as a negative sound speed gradient. However, in the stratosphere, the speed of sound increases with height due to heating within the ozone layer, producing a positive sound speed gradient.

In guns barrel length will also play a factor. I know you said rifle so this is more info then you need. Most HV .22 ammo will stay SS out of barrels less then 5". A lot of standard velocity ammo (usually match ammo), from what I have read since I have never used any, will stay SS in ~16" barrels. Of course other factors can come in to play. For longer barrels you are probably going to have to stick to SS ammo.
In YOUR semi auto gun you are just going to have to try a few brands and see if they function and if they do if they give you the accuracy you want. I have several different semi auto .22's that I run SS ammo in with my silencers. Sadly not all of them will function on the same kind. I have at least 4 different kinds of SS ammo on hand for them.0 -
Both Remington and Fiocchi sub sonics give good groups in my Savage Mk II, and they are both inexpensive ($3-3.50 per box). Most of the match ammo is also sub sonic, so if you are willing to pay the $5+ per box Wolf, SK, etc. are also options. Winchester and CCI both have sub sonic loads, but I don't like Win ammo and I can't find the CCI stuff locally. 0 -

A very popular subsonic load is the Mexican Super Sniper. It consists of a 60 grain bullet loaded in .22 short brass. It's guaranteed to be under the speed of sound no mater barrel length or temperature. Because of the long bearing surface of the 60 grain bullet it's much more accurate with a fast twist 8 rpi barrel.
Many tactical/special ops folks who have cans on customized Ruger 10-22's, have 8 rpi barrels specifically for this cartridge.0 -
Note- most semi autos will not function as a semi with the VERY light loads. I do have a few Remington 550-1s that WILL feed the CCI CB Long as a semi. DO read the boxes- I THINK the Aguilla SSS has a caution about using in semi rifles. When you get too far above or below 40 gr bullets, the rate of twist for the average 22 just does not cut it. Some of the 60 gr Aguillas I tried in a Marlin bolt action looked as if they were yawing when they hit the paper at 25 yards. 0 -
green/blue box remington target ammo works very well for me in several 10/22s i have. they are accurate, reasonably priced, and sold at wal-mart. 0 -
I run Winchester DynaPoint through my suppressed 22s.
It is a plated subsonic bullet and doesn't gunk up my suppressors as much as the lead bullets do.
