Winchester Model 70 Pre 64

rifle is in excellant condition , feather weight model,I assume it has original satin finish but is dull in spots, what is bleanest way to clean stock? do not want to refinish!

    I have a very nice Winchester Model 70 with an extremely detailed hand carved custom Fajen stock. I would like to find an inexpensive stock that I can put on the gun for hunting in the field. How do I know what will fit when I look at them online? It is a LA 25-06. Any information would be greatly helpful. By researching the serial number it is a pre-64 model.

    It would be better to hunt with the one that is on the gun, and spend your money on an original stock.

    pre 64 mod 70s never came in 25-06. Do you have a custom barrel?

    According the The Rifleman's Rifle, by Rule, the pre-'64 Winchester was not available in .25-'06 caliber. Either you have a post '64 Classic model 70 or it has been rebarreled.

    I bought a McMillan synthetic stock for my post '64 model 70 Classic and it was drop in fit. Without fitting it grouped better than the stock that came on it from Winchester.

    I am positive it is a pre-64 based on serial number. When I bought it it already had the custom stock and I guess it could have been rebarreled, but I am not sure. I am really not concerned about the value or authenticity due to the fact that it is very acurate, fun to shoot and I can't see myself ever selling it. However, I do really like the stock that is on it now and don't wnat to mess it up. Any help on determining fit would be great.

    snowy1, If, as a couple of us think, it has been rebarreled you may have a problem getting a drop in fit on a replacement stock unless the replacement stock has the identical barrel contour to the original. My only experience with replacement stocks is with McMillan and that was a good one as I mentioned in my earlier post.

    Sir, the cheapest route probably would be to find a Winchester factory fiberglass stock and if needed enlarge the barrel channel to fit. These stocks are quite plentiful and usually pariced from $25.00 to $40.00. The action should fit. If you decide to go this route let me know by email.

    I have a good gunsmith that can contour the barrel fit if need be, I just want to make sure the action will fit. I am not sure if I need to stick with a pre-64 stock or if I can go with a post 64, that also has a 2-piece floorplate. Without having a pre and post side by side to compare I am not sure what the differences are.

    If your gunsmith will contour the barrel, instead of the stock, then he is not a very good gunsmith, and you need to stay away from that. Google Loyyds stocks, and get yourself one. Part of the fun is fitting the new stock, and bedding it. It is not a hard process, and you can have one heck of a shooter when you are done.
