it is 3/16 diameter it is the anchor bolt for a laser mount made in the usa.
I went to fastenal today and he didn't have a gauge that would size it... 7 threads in 3/16 of an inch and a 3/16 diameter or 5 mm and the threads are one mm apart

I bet it is metric. But I am very surprised FASTENAL did not try his metric bolts and nuts to find a match. MSC has taps and dies for most every size bolt/screw and nuts if you can't find a match there then you will have to modify what you have to adapt to a standard size. 0 -

It would help us to help you if you would tell us exactly what you are working on & what you want to do with/to it.
The "about" size of 3/16 inch could either be 4.5mm (.177") or 5mm (.197"). Standard metric thread pitch for 4.5mm x .75mm would be about 34 threads per inch. Standard thread pitch for 5mm x .80mm would be about 31 3/4 threads per inch.
Closer measurement of the outside diameter of the threads will help to narrow the search & eliminate some of our guessing.

I know that you are asking about a piece for an American-made mount, but the fastener could still be a "foreign" piece. Not only could it be metric, but it may be Japanese Imperial Metric.0 -
Is there a machine shop nearby? A machinist could measure it for you.

If you still can not find a matching thread to it, it may be a Acme thread. This type is used on vises. No matter how tight you make them, it requires LESS torque to loosen them. Has to do with the angle of the pitch among other things. Bob 0
