cleaning old checkering

I just bought an old French bring back. I'd like to clean the years of grime out of the checkering.

What should I use?

    Raw Linseed oil and a tooth brush.

    I've used a toothbrush with just a bit of WD-40, dabbing up the grime with a rag as I go along with good success.

    [tastes a little funny when brush my teeth the next time, but that's a different matter][:D]

    Toothbrushes come with soft, medium or hard bristles. If medium will do the job use it. You may have to switch to hard bristles to get the job done, just go easy with the hard. Trimming the bristles so there is only one row left will allow you to put the pressure in the bottom of the checkering and not damage the top. Also, using good round strong wooden toothpicks may help to get any remaining grime out of the very bottom of the checkering. (Like getting the BBQ from between your teeth after a good meal. [:D]) The linseed oil is good for the wood and may help loosen the grime. Stay away from water based products that will cause the fibers to swell.

    A shot of steam from a steam iron held 6 or more inches away can also help loosen really stubborn grime. Don't do it to many times or to close or you run the risk of fiber swell.
