cost of UPS'ing a pistol
I was quoted a price of 62.00 to "overnight saver" a pistol to North Carolina from NJ, with an adult sig required.
The other party is pretty upset.[:(!]
I thought it was a bit much too.
Is there any alternative to my method of shipment?
Is Fedex an option and how competitive is their pricing?

Pricing for fedex will be about the same.
You can probably save 20-30 bucks if you take it to an FFL and have them ship it USPS.0 -
There may be a slight difference in price if you use Fedex, but not much; they also require Next Day Air for shipping a handgun. Where the carrier's "hub" is located from your house should be the deciding factor. You can find the exact charge for both carriers by going to their websites & using their shipping calculator.
While you cannot use USPS for shipping a handgun, dealers can. You may want to see if you have a local dealer willing to ship for you, as he can send it Priority Mail insured for < $20. Of course, if he's going to charge you $50 for his services (like MY dealers), then UPS or Fedex may still be the best way.

EDIT: We KNOW that you want to follow the law. Nwcid was afraid that you might not be aware the leeblackman's advice was incorrect, & hoped to keep you from making a terrible mistake. (A professional basketball player from MD is currently serving a 2 year federal sentence for failure to notify the common carrier that his package contained a firearm.)0 -
Yea, FFL dealers don't have to follow the same overnight shipping rules that UPS and Fed-Ex have. I found out the hard way having to ship a CZ pistol back to the factory. It cost me $80. A local FFL told me he typically ships around $35 or $40, but wanted me to pay a FFL "usage" fee of another $35. It still would have been cheaper than the $80 I spent.
Honestly if I did it again, I would ship it fed-ex of ups, and never mention anything about a firearm. Just make sure to get all the insurance you can get. The whole having to ship next day is not a law, its solely a company policy at fed-ex and ups. You are not required by law to disclose what is in the box.0 -
I have received handguns shipped via ground. The only problem is any loss or damage won't be covered no matter how ins you have since you didn't follow the company's policy. 0 -
While it IS a company POLICY to only ship handguns over night it IS a federal law that is being broken by not telling the carrier it is a firearm you are shipping............

My FLD will fill out the paperwork and let me take it and my gun to the post office. After a couple of dealings with a near-hysterical postal clerk, I just leave it with him to UPS. If I bought the gun from him, I made it a condition of sale that he would ship for repair or modification at cost. If I didn't get it from him, he does not charge enough to bring it up to the private individual ripoff rate. 0 -
Shipped out a Colt SAA .45 at FEDEX with $1000 insurance from SC to northern VA for $29. The insurance took it up from $15 to $29. I haven't shippd out anything that has cost me more than $40 with FEDEX and that's with signature delivery to make sure the FFL got it. 0 -
