Arisaka 99

Just curious what kind of value an Arisaka 99 would be. No pictures available, but condition is as follows: 75% condition overall, and still has the chrysanthemum present on the top. Also, the metal fold-down bi-pod(?) is still mounted. This item appeared at a local gun store today as well as a 4.10 stamped Nambu. Too bad the previous owner "improved" the appearance of the Nambu by nickel-plating it, as it had a very nice condition shell-type holster.

Anyway, I'm just looking for a ballpark figure on the Arisaka. I was under the impression the "mum" being present was a plus since most were removed directly following the war. Any opinions are appreciated.

    MOONED.....you don't mention it, but does it have the anti-aircraft sights? You do mention the monopod and the mum...is the mum complete? Some were completely removed, some were scratched but are still apparent...I take it that yours has not been touched in any way. Does it have the metal bolt shield...if it does check to see if the very small numbers on the edge match the gun #. With all those items...untouched mum, complete sights, bolt cover matched to rifle, 75% shape I would put the value at $400+ in this down market. Without those additions, $250+ or so. PS...the untouched mum usually means that it was a vet bringback and a captured weapon as almost all the surrended Japanese rifle had the Imperial crest (the "mum") defaced. Hope this helps.

    Collector value on Arisaka's (as w/most all guns) is dependant on absolute originality. In your case my main question would be if all the numbers match. All numbered parts should match the last 3 digets of the serial number on the left side of receiver. A Matching ground Mum rifle is more valuable than a mismatched rifle w/MUM.
    But there's more to consider. Not trying to be difficult. But for your protection to keep you from getting ripped off, Would really need more info. It could be a totally mismatched rifle that someone has built from parts. Believe me they are out there. And sometimes hard to spot unless you are an experienced collector. For example, on the bottom of the buttstock, between the hand grip and butt, there should be some stock stamps. These are often overlooked (except by collectors) because they are mistaken for common stck dings. But these will tell if the stock is the correct arsenal to match the receiver.
    Please try to get some pics. Particularly of the stamps on side of receiver. Hoping to help you further.

    +1 on fatsrat...impossible to get a real estimate....offhand worth 250. without matching with monopod...and anywhere from 300 up to 600 with a "general" matching type 99....without any further info/ imo
    nambu.

    the nambu is as you know as an early one,,to bad about he nickle plating...MANY guns where done that way..[B)]..bur at the time nobody cared about the original condition of any jap item

    Thanks all for the information. Judging by the replies, the cost the store is wanting for this item is far too high even if it was a perfect example. I'll take a "pass" on this one. It wasn't an item I was really looking for, but as I continue to expand the "never-ending collection", it caught my eye and figured I'd try to find out a bit more about it.
