35 REM
I am having to sell a model 14A Remington in 35 Rem. caliber. It was handed down in my family and I got it in 1968. In think sentimental value is clouding my value. It has minor surface pitting from being gun cased except for cleaning 1 time a year. The action is VERY smooth. It also has some notches on the butt from bucks killed. Any value opinions would be greatly appreciated. The serial # is C 24298Thanx

Great round. I have taken many deer with the .35 Rem in the Marlin 336. Try Remington Core-Lokt or Hornady LeverEvolution ammo. That seems to be the best value around my area. Best of luck. 0 -

Neither caliber to me has been outstanding enough to keep working on any kind of a regular basis.
So, here is what I'll give you that I do know from my limited experience. The .35 Rem fires a 180 gr. bullet at around 2200 and in some cases up to 2300 fps. The closest comparison I can give you is a .30-30 fires a 170 gr. bullet at around 2100 fps. The .35 Rem gives more energy by virtue that it shoots a heavier bullet.
Both shoot fast enough to kill deer at normal woods hunting ranges, i.e. out to 200 yds. If you wanted to get fanatical about ballistics both would kill deer out to 400 yds. But on both rifles you're talking a lot of drop. My curiosity got the better of me when I was a younger stomping around Ft. Stewart. I used to find .35 Rem cases all over the place. Obviously it had some merit. Once I looked into it I found it didn't have much velocity and I lost interest in it. But, for hunting in thick woods it does fine.
Depending on what you want to spend on bullets, or reloading is how much I would pursue the .35 Rem (that you now have anyway) for hunting. If you keep it within it's limitations it's a good round.0 -
To me, the 35 wins out hands down. Where we hunt, most shots are normally 100 yards or less and the 35 is king in those types of conditions. We have used 270's, 30-06, 243, 6 MM,7MM Mag and 30-30, but the best gun at deer camp always seems to be the 35, at least for the conditions we hunt. 0 -
The 35 Rem is winner, hands down. I have used and killed deer with both in my younger day. The 35 puts more weight out there at a little quicker velocity, and that does add up, especially when considering not the ft-lbs of energy, but the Taylor factor. The larger diameter speaks for itself, kinda like a 9mm Vs. a 45.

I can tell you, that I also have used the 35 Remington in a Super 14 Contender. Handloading the 180 grain Hornady SSP to 2300 FPS, it is formidable on 200 Meter Rams, and I did take a whitetail with is at 257 paces. It is going to be even better yet with the ELASTOMER tipped bullets that Hornady has, in lever guns. Wouldn't it be nice to see Marlin and Hornady come up with another addition to their 308 Marlin Express, and their 338 Marlin Express? How about the 358, 375, and 416 Marlin Express?0 -
I have hunted deer with everything from a 22/250 to a 45/70 during the last 40 years. The gun that has put the most venison in my freezers is a Marlin 336 in .35remington. That 200 grain silver tip will stop a deer
at once if you hit it any where near the vitals. And it will bust it's way thru small trees to get there........ Bob0 -
WHere I hunt you rarely can get a shot past 75 yrds. I already own numerous higher power, flatter shooting rifles. (30-06,308,270,7mm mag, 35 whelen, 243, 45-70) All of which rarely come out of the cabinet during hunting season because they are just "too much" gun for around here. When i dont have a bow in my hands it usually my model 870 slug gun. Im sure a few of you have checked and saw that Im from NY. Just a few miles from here an infant was killed 2 yrs ago by some a-hole city slicker that came upstate for the weekend and decided he needed his 300win to hunt 100yrds behind some houses. He shot right through the house and struck the girl. Now there's been some harassement around here from the local anti's (my neighbors) and when they see you with anything with a bolt they figure its a "high power sniper rifle" sure to kill people, not harvest deer. The actions of one idiot make it harder on all of us. One of these days im going to get out of here and settled down someplace a little more my speed. But untill this economy turns around it looks like its gonna be me sneakin past the anti's with my 35 0 -

I have a load that works in my XP100 and 336 Marlin. I use 150 gr. Remington PSP bullets. I load only 2 in the Marlin. One in chamber and one in magazine. 0 -
I have two in 35 Remington, a Marlin lever and a vintage Remington 141 pump. Both make excellent eastern whitetail rifles that are much better than the 30/30 if you use the 200 grain bullets in your 35. Forget anything lighter. The 200 grain bullets make the rifles perform. 0
