Colt LMG Questions?

Whats the general consensus on a Colt LMG are they worth having; aren't these basically an American 'RPK' equivalent to the Russian RPK, so as a heavy barreled machine-gun capable weapon?

Will a regular Colt AR15 bolt as well as other Colt AR15 parts interchange and work properly in a Colt LMG as a replacement part or no?

    I don't know what the general consensus is but it is a fun gun to shoot. Even with the extra heavy barrel the Colt is not really a light machine gun, it is more of an automatic rifle along the lines of the old BAR; easily man portable and capable of laying down some rapid fire...For a very short period of time. The Colt is actually a few pounds lighter than the BAR and with a 100 round C-Drum it can serve a useful purpose but without a quick change barrel it cannot be considered a SAW and won't serve in the same capacity as the M249. The big advantage is that the Colt is about 5 pounds lighter than the M249 and doesn't cost Uncle Same five grand a copy. For the semi autos; like everything else in this class it is basically just a high dollar toy for those who like such things and really has no real use of any kind. The bolts will interchange as well as a large number of basic parts.

    Yeah with no option to change out the barrels I would agree that the high rates of fire would have to be for short periods of time no doubt.

    Is there an adapter or anything that could allow the barrel to be changed out quick, although I would doubt it?

    So then any Colt AR15 bolts and or other AR15 parts can be used in a Colt LMG and it will still function properly, interesting as I thought that these could only use the Colt AR15 bolts that had the longer ends?

    Also, what is the story with the Diemaco LMG and Colt LMG or are they the same thing, any stamp marks to verify if its Colt or Diemaco?

    Yes, the parts will interchange in the bolt carrier/bolt group. They are really like the RPK in a sense they are box fed, and do not have an interchangable barrel. As Mark pointed out the SAW is a better weapon for sustained fire, but the real Bad A$$ of the class are the PKM, and MG-42. They are a little heavier yet, but they are robust, and offer a rate of fire second only to the electric gatling guns.

    Thanks tsr good info, yeah the PKM and MG-42 are nice indeed but expensive.

    The factory Colt 750 LMG fires from an open bolt. The bolt will interchange but not the carrier or fire control parts.

    The actual military model as issued fires from an open bolt and uses a lower marked safe and auto, there is no provision for semi automatic fire. There are probably no more than a dozen of these that are transferable and even restricted dealer sales samples are rare so you won't be likely to find one for sale. The upper receiver, which at one time was available separately (which is how I got mine)), can be installed on any MILSPEC M16/AR-15 lower so if you use it on an M16 lower you will have selective fire, but from a closed bolt, which of course will further limit the number of rounds you can fire before the barrel heats up. I've never seen any sort of conversion for the RO-750 that allows the barrel to be quickly replaced. Just like the RPH, the RO-750 is an amusing toy:

    Interesting thread here, & am very glad to stumble-upon it this am. Years ago, I picked up a loose barrel assy for one of these kriters from Sarco, or possibly Numrich. Until now, we never quite knew for sure what it was native to, but that's suddenly settled.
    That beast of a barrel weighed-in @ about 6 lbs stripped.

    Besides GB is there anywhere selling Colt LMG's NIB?

    Also, couldn't you basically build a Colt LMG on a Colt 6600/6700 HBAR as it certainly looks the part except for the squared fore-guard, bi-pod and carry handle; couldn't these parts be added to the Colt 6600/6700 HBAR?

    Didn't Colt test fire the Colt LMG's before selling them I would imagine?

    Were there ever any Colt LMG Lowers made other than for the military perhaps a civilian version, were the Colt LMG lowers marked Colt LMG on the receiver, any pics?

    CDNN had a small number of the factory uppers which were military contract overruns for sale back in 1999 and priced at $595. The M16 bolt carriers had been removed and you had to show that you were an FFL dealer or had an NFA Tax Stamp of some kind in order to purchase the M16 carrier at an additional $100. I believe that one or two of the after market AR parts manufactures (it might have been DPMS) were also marketing a copy, but it lacked the square forend and the factory bipod. What is available now is all going to be found on the resale market and prices for the factory uppers was approaching two grand a couple of years ago when folks still had money to spend. Items like this are hit and miss and if you don't buy them when they are available they come and go pretty darned fast.
