Hand gun shipping

I know the rules and cost involved for non FFL holders shipping hand guns via UPS. Can FFL holders domestically ship hand guns via UPS without having to ship next day air? In other words can he or she ship UPS ground to another FFL and not have to pay for next day air charges?

    If he is a FFL dealer he can ship USPS much cheaper FLAT RATE BOX Insured delivery Confirmation so they can track package. All he has to do is fill out the form . for the Post office Once and then he is GOOD TO GO. for any shipments in the future. [^][:)]

    UPS and Fedex have POLICIES that require handguns to be shipped overnight. From what I understand this was done to decrease theft by THEIR employees.

    My local hub ships them 2nd day at about 1/2 the cost. If you are an FFL and can convince them to ship them ground that is their CHOICE. There is NO LAW that states they have to be shipped overnight.

    Good point. I think the reason they go 2nd day is that from my location there is no "overnight" shipping available.............

    Yes it is an actual hub but very small. It is about 80 miles from the closest "real" hub. They are only open from 4pm to 6pm M-F for pick up or drop off. We have a UPS store inside of one of grocery stores and they WILL take guns to and it may be due to this limited service from the hub.

    I was in buying a box from the Store one day and they wanted to know do all the paperwork to ship. I said it was a rifle so I had to go to the hub and they (mom and pop owners) said they do handle guns.

    The UPS and FedEx policies do not have an exception for dealers.

    UPS & Fedex call their rules "tariffs". If you ship a firearm in violation of their tariffs, & it is lost or damaged, they will not pay; it will be your loss. It doesn't matter what you were told by employee, their tariff is the only thing they will go by.

    EDIT: Nwcid, I have never heard of a "hub" that didn't provide Next Day Air. Are you sure that it's a "hub" (company customer counter), & not a contractor such as a UPS Store?

    EDIT: That's interesting. But, I wonder how the company would treat a loss. I once spoke to a UPS executive who explained that they require Next Day Air for handguns so that the package will go directly into the "lock room" (really, a cage) until it's loaded into the pod for the nightly transfer to the airport; any other way of shipping, it would go into the warehouse where it would be subject to possible theft. I would think that at Nwcid's hub you would still need to pay for Next Day Air, or else they could still claim that you violated their tariff. But, that's just a guess.

    Perry, every time you ship a handgun you have to fill out a form 1508 ,not just once.Ten shipments to different FFLs you'll have to make out 10 of the 1508 forms. [:)]
