Need help from Broomhandle Mauser expert

I've been tasked with appraising a large quantity of them. Everything from shooters to collector grade. A lifetime's worth of collecting.

    Hello I currently own a Broom Handle with its original Holster/ Shoulder stock & Pigskin leather gear. It would seem that If someone collected broom handles then that person would have kept records of serial numbers and values SOME WHERE If you are trying to settle an estate. Are you sure you have looked every where for records. I had a friend that passed and I was asked to sell ALL his guns and related items I dropped a small screw if the floor of his safe & when looking for it on the shag carpet floor of safe I found a VERY LARGE stash of $100 Bills in the hollow door jam of the safe. & I mean LARGE. they were rolled up in rolls of 20 from the top to bottom on both sides of the door in the U shaped steel that lacked about 1 inch from going to the bottom.

    Link below will get you started. However, you have a big responsibility to the estate/family.

    Take your time, and ask the court for latitude in establishing worth.

    If there's a deadline, find out who's setting it, and confront directly. Impress that the more research, the higher the value.

    Perhaps ask the executor if you can have your pick of one of the pieces as a fee for your time? Just a thought. Here's the link. Good Luck!

    If their is a lot of them , then you should contact one of the large auction houses that deal in firearms exclusively. IE Little Johns, JC Devine, or Rock Island These guys will also offer honest appraisals and for a large enough collection will come to you.

    Keep in mind also that appraising for an estate, max value is probably not the goal. Realistically the practical value should be the amount a dealer would pay or what the item/s might fetch at auction. The higher the appraisal value the further you put the estate into estate tax area. Best have a strategy seance with the estate's attorney. Been there, Done that!!

    Google "the c96 forum." There are enough respondees that you should get a good start on what you want to do. Remember, that a large group of even rare handguns of a certain model will immediately create a glut on the market and drop prices somewhat. My son-in-law has enough Big and Baby Ben clocks to ruin the market for them should they all go on auction at once.

    I also had a friend who was a locksmith, and he opened a safe like you did, filled with those small tomatoe juice cans rolled and stuffed with hundred dollar bills. He told me he sat back on his heels, and hollered until one of the family came to him, then said, "I want nothing more to do with this, you're a witness I haven't touched anything..."

    the 1896 mauser forum has a lot of good information. just keep in mind it is a dead forum. it was abandoned 2 yrs ago and now the site has been taken over by spammers. don't download anything for the interactive sections, some are corrupted by some nasty viruses.
    good info there. i used the site to id two "oddball" broomhandles i have. most folks thought they were not factory original, but this site shows they are (and worth considerably more).
    jan c still's book is a good resource, as is his luger forum.
    recommend you learn how to take em apart and re-assemble them to check originality. big part of their value.
    there is a considerable number of guns converted to 9mm for import to the us years ago and now being sold as factory 9mm at high prices. there's some excellent repro grips out there and the con artists make good use of them.
    there are also some chinese knock-off guns out there that have been re-stamped to look like mausers. pretty easy to tell the difference after you've seen a couple.
    one last thing, a complete rig like perry mentioned is very valuable if original. but the stock/holster has been reproduce for the last 40 yrs and are very hard to tell from the originals. i have some pics of a full rig i have that could pass for all originall to at least 50% of the buyers out there. theyre too big for the forum, but i could email 'em if youre interested.
