Enforcer Question for B.Goforth
Bill, if you are monitoring the boards or anyone else who would know,
I asked some questions in the past about legitimate serial numbers on Iver Johnson enforcers and the dates they changed manufactures. I finally got the enforcer I wanted and now I am trying to pin down the date it was made.
It is marked Plainfield Machine, Dunellen N.J. PP .30 M-1. The serial is PP 002XX and has PMC stamped on the side of the rear sight. The receiver has an unusual feature that I have not noticed on other M-1 carbines, as it has dual ramps to guide the bullets from the mag to the chamber. All I have seen before have a single ramp in the center.
It is identical to one verified as a Plainfield Machine Enforcer on m1carbinesinc.com
Unless Iver Johnson started re-numbering them from 000, the low serial suggests it is a Plainfield Machine built Enforcer circa 1977-78.(best guess)
I have done much research but cannot get a definitive answer. Someone on a different board insists Plainfield didn't make it and I have a bubba'd gun, which I don't believe, but I still would like a professional opinion from someone who knows better.

i have not done a lot of research on the Plainsfield guns yet. so i am not going to be much help. i also do not have any literature from 1978 until 1981. what i do have shows the Enforcer so it must have been developed by Plainsfield as iver johnson did little R&D during this time. i fact one piece of literature shows about 500 enforcers made in 1977 and 1978. so far there have not been any other information to confirm this production nor do i have any information on serial numbers. i do know for it to be a original enforcer it must have been manufactured as a pistol and reported to BATF as a pistol.
all factory records were turned over to BATF when iver johnson purchased Plainsfield in 1978. maybe some one else will have better luck than i have had getting this information from the BATF.

Have you shot yours yet? Does it work?
There was one floating around Northern Illinois for the last 5-10 years. Bought and sold multiple times at various gun shops in IL. I happen to know the same pistol appeared 2 to 3 times at the shop I part timed at.
Also saw it a couple other gun shops.
It would only function - fire with it's factory magazine.0 -
as you can tell i lived through the medical procedure late last year but since that time i have been busy on the H&R book which is now very close to being ready. tell jim any time he wants to continued our discussions i will make time for them. when the H&R book is finally out i believe it will be time to start researching iver johnson's long guns in ernest, which would include the carbines.

It looks too clean to have been passed around, the stock is barely scratched. I would think a problematic gun would have received a few scratches from angry owners. I dismantled it for inspection as soon as I got it, and it looks to me like it could use a new bolt and barrel, so I intend to rebuild it first with USGI parts. My only concern for the moment was that it is an early, mil spec enforcer and the receiver is pistol legitimate.
Now that those two criteria are met, it will be renewed and upgraded and it will be my best friend for life, (unless I find another one of the same vintage) If I had the money I would buy every pre '79 mil spec enforcer of good condition that I could find. Being a 1978 Plainfield stamped Enforcer with a production number below 300 was a dream come true. I doubt I could find an earlier example in as good shape as this one and still be affordable

Would have loved getting this un-fired stainless that was up for auction some time back, but I didn't have that kind of cash. I think it went for a grand. I did save pictures of it though so I can say I actually saw one once (kicks rocks) [:D]0 -

My first enforcer belonged to a fellow who fancied himself as a gunsmith. It had been 'fully modified' which led to a new barrel and handguard due to a mis-fire, which blew a hole through the top. (I saw the hand guard) The mod was removed, gun repaired and I became the next owner. I have considered obtaining said parts for an end of days scenario, but the thought of repeating the incident and breaking my favorite toy (or sustaining injury) concerns me, legality aside.0 -
i have a IJ enforcer serial EF00778,it looks new and has a USGI magazine marked KSG. it has been fired,but i have not fired it. eastbank. 0 -
