Anyone have any info on my friends 12 Ga SxS...

28" Barrels

Stocks looks to be Walnut or mohagany lop's 14" and 13.5"

    The gun is as you may well know a "Trade Brand Name" shotgun. If you don't know, a "Trade Brand Name" shotgun is one that was made by a major maker for and sold by a wholesaler or retailer who chose the name to go on the gun. Most of the shotguns were made between 1900 and 1940. Guns with the name XLCR were made bu one of two makers, Hopkins & Allen Arms Company of Norwich,CT (1868 to 1915) or Iver Johnson's Arms & Cycle Works of Fitchberg,MA (1871 to 1993). They were made for and sold by the W. Bingham & Company a sporting goods and hardware dealer located in Cleveland. Ohio (1880 to 1910). I'm going to make a WAG and sat the gun was made by Iver Johnson. Sorry but I don't have any serial number-year made tables for either maker. I'm sure your friend will want to know the value of his gun. The value of one of these old guns will depend on its condition, the amount of original finish remaining on the metal and wood as well as the mechanical condition. Value for a prime example that appears to have come out of the factory yesterday afternoon might bring as much as $175 while a rusty rotten incomplete piece of junk fit only for a fire place poker might bring $10 for parts. A word of caution. These guns were designed using the technology of the times and for the ammunition in use then which was either black powder or very early low pressure smokeless powder and possible damascus barrels with 2 1/2 inch chambers. They were not designed for more modern high pressure smokeless powder, 3 inch or magnum shells or steel shot. Since I can't see the gun for a hands on examination, I have to recommend that your friend doesn't attempt to shoot it.
