Rust on a coin finish

Can this type of rust be mitigated or does it mean that the receiver is rusting from behind the plating and you have to find some way to live with it?

What can be done to clean it up?

  i have cleaned this type of rust with a "miracle polishing cloth" bought at a gun show from a knife dealer. hard to find but work well for this type of rust on plated metal.

  Keep wet with KROIL for up to 48 hours then use Burlap bag to scrub. This will NOT harm finish . any abrasive will wear the finish. Just my $.02

  But, realistically, don't get your hopes up. The basic problem is that the plating is largely worn off, exposing the underlying steel to air & moisture in many places. What has been lost, can't be recovered.
