Win 1885...Experts???

Does anything appear refinished to you? Case color look correct? Wood? I need Bert or another 1885 expert to take a quick look.

Here is what I am questioning.
1. The checkering pattern is not like any other scheutzen I have seen. The forearm pattern, and especially the stock right near the grip cap should be curved at the border. also the checkering shows no darkening as it should over time.
2. The overall color of the stain.
3. The overall apperance of the case coloring
4. I do not see a serial no. on the lower tang where it should be, nor do I see the barrel no. above the forearm?
5. The overall lack of shine on the finish of the wood doesnt look right?

Here are some better photos, which to me look like an oil finish on the wood. The checkering also doesnt look right and does not match any that are in campbells books.

I dropped the hammer on it AGAIN without an experts opinion, fortunatly the buyer gave me a 3 day inspection period...[B)]. Every one of the ones in campbell shows a different checkering pattern but the new photos he sent me still look correct markings and all.

    I would assume that somethings are not all original on this rifle. One being the barrel. There is a proof mark on the upper part of the action ring, and none corresponding on the barrel. The sheen on the stock looks a little out of place, and there are some reds in the color case hardening.

    I can't answer to the questions you brought up other than to say when red flags appear there's usually a reason! The thing that jumped at me was Winchester's difinitive proof mark on the top of the receiver, on Winchester's other lever action models this didn't start to appear till a few years after this gun was shipped, I don't know if it was roll stamped on this vintage of the model 1885...

    That really looks like a nice gun.... it has to be confirmed by the experts as to it's originality. Pauline Muerrle also on this site and the Winchester site can absolutely confirm the checkering pattern.

    Please let us know what you find out.

    Not being a collector type, would the different serial numbers mean anything? Like in a Mauser it means something if all the parts have the same serial numbers as the main receiver.

    Also, just suggesting a thought as I'm not into the collector end of these, would the differences you mention be because of it being a 'custom'? I can't really say I've ever seen these type rifles built as a mainstream model by any manufacturer. And they are almost all high end/high dollar.

    Edit:

    I would have to say that even while I'm not a collector, that piece for the beauty of it alone, is worth having. I saw it sold just now for $9500.00

    The numbers you see on the frame are not serial numbers but assy. numbers. I have a shceutzen already that I am comparing it to. That and campbells books is really all I have to go on because I have not handled (or seen) but a couple of these guns. I will start another thread.

    Funny thing, The only other 1885 Scheutzen I bought was last year while Bert was also away at Cody. [V]

    Well...that will give Bert something to drool and slobber about when he sees it...just like the rest of us Cartod...it is beautiful, and hope it is all correct.
