Best .22 pistol to run suppressor on?
And why?

Let me specify a conventional semi-automatic pistol here.
Not a bolt action or "hand rifle" type gun.

I don't have a particular suppressor in mind yet.
Purpose would be for plinking without ear protection, and *maybe* (in the hypothetical "SHTF" scenario, as a survival gun.
Along the line of what Perry Shooter suggested, I'm actually thinking a Smith 22A on account of the inexpensive and easily changeable barrels, plus, of course, I already have one to play around with.
High Standard could work too, but the problem there is that I'm not inclined to outfit what I primarily consider a collectible match gun this way. But I guess costs should be fairly low with one, given that replacement barrels can be had under $200.

I like the Savage Striker. I have one in 17 HMR. All of the auto-loaders are fun, but they do get dirty very quickly. I either have or have had the P22, Mosquito High Standard and Ruger Autos suppressed. The Striker is my favorite 0 -

How does the suppressor work with the 17HMR? Don't you still have the sonic crack?
I have a Ruger Mark II that all you can hear is the bolt cycle with standard velocity LR shells. It couldn't work any better.0 -
High Standard because you can have 2 or more barrels and they are quick change one with and others without Supperssor. 0 -
High Standard is a good choice but I know little about them.
Most common are the Ruger and Browning pistols.
I prefer Browning over the Ruger. Problem I have is the Browning has a large steel barrel being hit buy a large steel bolt. It is very loud. I had a Buckmark rifle that I ended up threading. I dont think I put 200rds thought it before I sold it as it was at least 2x as loud as any of my other suppressed guns. I hear that using aluminum barrel like the ones from Tacsol is much quieter but I have not heard one.
My P22 is an ok gun.
My favorite is my Kimber 1911/22 that I had the barrel threaded. I have put thousands of rounds though it.0 -
To really answer correctly, you would need to know which suppressor and what you want it for.
I have a MKIII with an integrally suppressed barrel. It sounds about like a nail gun. I also have a buckmark that I think shoots better (trigger pull, more reliable - at least with mine).
If I didn't have a 22lr pistol, I would probably buy the Sig Mosquito. You can get one with a threaded barrel rather than paying someone to thread a buckmark or mkIII. They are easier to takedown and clean.
I would also get the SilencerCo Sparrow, because of its amazing noise reduction and easy servicing of the baffles.
You could probably get the Sig & Sparrow for $1100 including tax. That would be a pretty sweet setup and comparable in price to the Browning or Ruger.0 -

To my way of thinking, the only real criterion would be a semi-auto pistol known to have reliable function with sub-sonic ammo.
Alas, You will have to rely the folks here to advise you as to which guns will cycle Okay, and which ones will not vis-a-vis subsonic ammunition. Kind of a gray area to me. Sorry I couldn't help more. Good luck!

I have to 100% disagree with this one MOST .22 pistols with less then 5" barrels will keep most standard and high speed ammo SS. They may or may not keep "hyper velocity" ammo SS.
One of the nicest things about my .22 pistols is that I can run Federal bulk pack (cheep) ammo out of them vs more expensive SS ammo. Of course to be real quiet all the rifles need SS. I hear some 16" rifles do keep standard velocity .22 lr SS but I have no experience with standard speed ammo.
But I will agree that the more reliable the gun the better off you are.0 -
To answer the question of the 17 HMR. Yes you still get the sonic crack but the pistol is very comfortable to shoot without hearing protection. I have an AWC Archangel III on it, and it is great fun to shoot. I'm also looking for a good deal on a 22 and 22 mag Striker. I would love to have a complete set. 0
