Remington 722 help

I picked up a remington 722 in 300 savage. It has two drilled and tapped screws holes on the top in front of the action and two drilled and tapped screw holes on the left rear side on the back of the action. Could the ones in the back have been for a peep site, or does any one know of a scope mount in this configuration. I really don't want to drill any more holes in the gun could someone recommend a scope mount.Thank you.

    I believe the back/side screws were for a peep sight. My 721 was drilled on top/rear for scope mounts. I mounted a redfield one piece base to mine. I'll dig mine out of the cave, but I believe mine has the same set-up for a peep sight too.

    my 721 is only tapped on the front reciever ring and on the left lower side for a reciever sight,but the rear reciever ring is not tapped. the very early ones were not tapped on the rear reciever ring,my rifle was made in march 1948,the barrel code is CTT. i,m not sure when they started to tap the rear reciever ring,maybe in june or july 1948. there was a stith scopt mount that used the rear sight dove tail and the front tapped reciever ring to mount a scope. eastbank.

    If the top tappings are on the barrel you might want to contact Ken Viani (try googling ken viani scope mounts) I have one of his mounts on my winchester 52 which uses the 2 mounting holes on the barrel and the 2 holes on the L/S of the receiver where the peep sight would be mounted

    there were scope mounts made to use the existing holes.

    yes their were mounts made for the reciever sight holes and the front reciever holes,but you had to remove wood from the stock to get the rear base-mount to fit. i have chosen to just use my rifle with the factory open sights other than modify it. eastbank.

    My 722 has the holes/tapped on the rear left side for receiver sight. It also has the holes for scope bases in the normal position front and rear. No big thing for gunsmith or yourself if experienced to drill and tap for rear base, sooner do that than try and find odd rear base that utilizes side holes and remove stock wood.

    There was indeed a Stith mount made over 50 years ago to use the front scope mount holes and the rear barrel rear sight holes. This mount required a scope that could be taken apart, such as the Weaver, short Unertl, or OLD Bushnell. Also, they were made only for scopes in 2.5x or 4x, nothing bigger or variable.

    Bausch & Lomb also made a mount back then to use the rear peep holes & the front receiver ring holes, but it was strictly for the B&L non-adjustable scopes.

    The front receiver ring holes on these early examples of the 721 & 722 were intended by Remington to be used in conjunction with the barrel rear sight dovetail to mount a long Unertl or Lyman tatget/varmint type scope.

    my 721 also has the serial number in the left hand bolt lug race way along with thw rear reciever not being tapped, so this rifles rear reciever ring will not be tapped. i have alot of other rifles to hunt with that have scopes on them.if you have one of these old 722,s or 721,s leave it alone and buy another rifle,you will be glad you did in years to come. eastbank.
